What Are Epidural Injections?
Epidural injections deliver anti-inflammatory steroid medication directly around the spinal nerves via the epidural space. This reduces nerve irritation and offers temporary but significant relief from:
- Lower back or neck pain
- Sciatica
- Spinal stenosis
- Herniated discs
Procedure and Safety
Performed under X-ray or ultrasound guidance, the injection takes 10–15 minutes and may involve a short recovery period. It is done as a day procedure, with patients returning home the same day. Most experience relief within 3–5 days, lasting weeks to months.
When to Consider It
Epidural injections are best suited for patients who:
- Haven’t responded to medications or physiotherapy
- Aren’t ready for surgery
- Need short-term pain relief to engage in rehab
Multiple injections can be spaced throughout the year if needed.
